Indexing, Crawling and Ranking … Understanding How Search Engines Find Websites

Before I can explain to you how to get your site to the top of the rankings, I think it’s important for you to understand how any site gets to the top of the rankings. Knowing how search engines find websites is crucial to understanding how you can make your website more visible to search engines and, more importantly, to your potential clients.

 

Let’s say that you type into a search engine the search term, “Cleveland SEO Services”. Almost immediately, that search engine pulls up the web pages that best match your query according to its algorithm.
 

How do search engines find the most relevant websites?

 

Search engines have a pre-populated index of web content, (kind of like a book’s index or table of contents) which they immediately reference and dig through when a search query is made. In order to create and update that index, search engines use “spiders” to strategically “crawl” through the Internet looking for new and updated pages to include in search results (good visual, huh?).

 

These search engines use an algorithmic process (a ridiculously smart computer program) to determine which sites to crawl, how often, and how many pages to fetch from each site. (Google states that there are over 200 factors that are used in determining a site’s relevancy.)

 

You want to be sure that your site is optimized for those search engines, and that your site is consistently being updated with new, relevant and quality content, so that search engines can correctly and continually crawl, index and, most importantly, rank your site at the top of the search results for the appropriate and desired search terms.

 

A few questions to ask yourself about your website:

 

1.     Has your website url been submitted to Google and the other search engines?

2.     Have you also submitted a sitemap? (This can help search engines crawl and index more pages on your site.)

3.     Are you continually adding to and updating your website's content with quality information so that Google will believe your site is relevant?
