As part of my senior project at Skoda Minotti, I am writing a daily blog that summarizes my activities each day at the firm and includes my insights and learnings about the field of marketing.
As my senior year of high school began to draw to an end, I started to look for shadowing opportunities for my senior project. Senior project is a two week program in which high school seniors reach out to a local company for an opportunity to explore their individual interests and get greater insight into potential career opportunities. At the top of my list was Skoda Minotti Strategic Marketing. They were number one on my list because I want to pursue a career in marketing. In late February, I reached out to them and was quickly accepted to work at their Cleveland office starting May 5th. Before coming into Skoda Minotti, I was pretty anxious to see exactly how the opportunity would unfold. After walking into the office and seeing how focused the entire team was on their work, I immediately knew that I was going to be fine.
Today is my first day and for the next eight days I am going to chronicle my experience at Skoda Minotti and post it to their blog.
It’s 9:30 a.m. and I’m just getting myself settled in. After a few minutes I was walked around the office and introduced to the team. Everyone I meet had bright smiles and was very nice. After being introduced to everyone in the office, I realized that they all shared something in common. They were all very passionate about their work. After introductions, I sat down with the partner in charge of Strategic Marketing, Jonathan Ebenstein. Mr. Ebenstein showed me a PowerPoint about all of the necessities to succeed in marketing, as well as the approach that Skoda Minotti takes to be successful.
I sat down to speak with Marketing Specialist, Sarah Chula. I learned from Sarah the steps she took to get to where she is today, as well as getting to know what she specializes in.
After lunch, I met with Senior Online Marketing manager, Bob Goricki. When I sat down with Bob, I could really tell that he worked very hard in the online marketing world. It was interesting to learn that Bob originally didn’t start his career doing online work. He was a public relations specialist. However he soon after developed a passion for all things online, and he spent months learning about online marketing (e.g., website design and development, search engine optimization, Google AdWords, etc). It showed how dedicated he really is to providing Skoda Minotti and its clients with the best online marketing they can possibly receive.
My last meeting of the day was with Matt Seitz, Senior Marketing Manager. Matt showed me how important social media is to Skoda Minotti and its clients and how important it is to continually be learning on your own in order to be considered an expert at what you do. Matt explained to me numerous ways he learned to improve Skoda Minotti’s social media efforts on Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn. He explained that he did this by reading up on best social media practices others had written. Matt also showed me how powerful social media can be in creating positive awareness for a company because of how quickly you can communicate with followers and users of Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn.
After packing up and reflecting on my day, I feel that this is going to be a great learning experience—one that will teach me a lot about what it is really like to work in the world of marketing.
