The Challenge

In 2001, Mazzella Lifting Technologies (Mazzella) was an $11 million company. Its leaders sought to pursue growth, and they approached Skoda Minotti for assistance.

The Goal

Mazzella began working with Skoda Minotti in 2001. From the beginning of this relationship, we initiated proactive and ongoing dialogue with Mazzella’s leadership to understand the company’s unique business challenges and goals, and from that, we developed a plan alongside them to help guide their growth. Specifically, Skoda Minotti helped Mazzella develop the right capital structure, helped develop people in the correct roles, created a customized acquisition strategy and set up beneficial financing relationships.

The Solution

Conventional wisdom might suggest that a strategic acquisition within Mazzella’s core lifting market made perfect sense, but Mazzella and Skoda Minotti thought more broadly as well. So long as a target company was well-run by solid management and offered tangible opportunities for growth, Mazzella was willing to consider it. As a result, in 2004, Mazzella completed the acquisition of Sheffield Metals International (Sheffield), a leader in the distribution of coated and bare metal products, as well as engineered standing seam metal roof (SSMR) and wall systems. Lifting and roofing technologies may not seem complementary; but for Mazzella, the acquisition had several key benefits:

  • It evened out the company’s overall revenue stream throughout subsequent years, strengthening its financial stability
  • It streamlined the process of pursuing acquisitions in Sheffield’s broad industry sector
  • It facilitated introductions to business leaders and potential business opportunities in Sheffield’s sector that otherwise may never have come to pass
  • It provided new entry into important geographic markets for Mazzella’s core business, as well as its related businesses

The Result

Through acquisitions in Mazzella’s core crane businesses, additional acquisitions like Sheffield and related businesses, and an array of ongoing strategic business advisory services, Skoda Minotti has helped grow Mazzella’s business from that $11 million mark in 2001 to over $250 million in 2018.
"Skoda Minotti has been an invaluable part of our revenue growth for the past two decades. They've provided us with strategic insights on acquisitions, financing and staffing. They are true partners."
